Self-discipline is an ongoing struggle for me, its not as if I live an unruly life or I am constantly controlled by my emotions. I just find myself not giving my best in the things that truly matter to me, I find myself not keeping commitments to myself, I find myself realizing that I can do better but not giving that extra push to be better. I find myself struggling with inertia (I know I need to move but I’ll rather not kinda- thing).
I know what discipline is and I know the benefits of it in my life and many of us do. Why then do we struggle to
do the things we know are right?
As a child of the highest God and citizen of Gods kingdom, I decided to search the scripture to see what it had to say about this struggle.
But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! Gal 5:22,23 NLT
Self control or self-discipline is a fruit of the Holy Spirit, it is a result of the work of the Holy Spirit in a persons life.
For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. 2 Timothy1:7NLT
Why is it that many of us don’t live in that reality? I believe its because we are constantly at war with our fleshly desires, and sometimes we don’t walk in line with the Spirits leading.
Our fleshly nature has appetites and desires so we constantly have to choose who we want to follow. we either choose to go with the flesh our natural desires or with the Spirit. Our lives are a reflection of the choices we make often. If we follow the flesh it leads us to disorder and death but if we follow the Spirit it leads to life. I can’t be a child of the King and then run my life based on my fleshly desires.
Galatians5:16,25 CJB says, What I am saying is this: run your lives by the Spirit. Then you will not do what your old nature wants. Since it is through the Spirit that we have Life, let it also be through the Spirit that we order our lives day by day.
How then can I live my life by the Spirit? the answer is by Abiding. Stay in the word, remain connected to your source, practice Gods presence daily.
